Dragon Con Superheroes

The Dragon Con Superheroes is a community service project team for our members, volunteers, and staff to give back to our local community. Since 2014, Dragon Con Superheroes have contributed more than 4,000 hours to Atlanta-area non-profits.

Projects have included packing and sorting food items for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, maintaining trails at Sweetwater Creek State Park, working the Walk to End Lupus Now, building community gardens with the ACFB, supporting the Lymphoma Walk, cleaning and spreading mulch in Piedmont Park, a school supplies drive and backpack packing event with For the Kid in All of Us, a toy drive and bingo event with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, delivering more than 8,500 books to Literacy Action and supporting their Friends and Family day, giving a woman’s shelter a top-to-bottom spring cleaning for Partnership Against Domestic Violence, and hosting a booth for athletes and families with the Special Olympics of Georgia. In all, over 300 Dragon Con fans and their family members have volunteered on the Superheroes projects.

In celebration of our Superheroes’ contributions to the community, all Dragon Con Superheroes participating in this year’s projects will receive a free Superheroes t-shirt. Additional benefits and recognition given for Superheroes Superstars volunteering regularly with the team.

Event 2: Snack and Toiletry Bags for CURE Childhood Cancer

Frequently children with cancer are admitted to the hospital with little notice. They often have lengthy outpatient clinic visits and/or hospital stays. CURE helps by distributing snack and toiletry bags to parents at the Aflac Cancer Centers of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. We will collect items to meet these essential needs and extras that make their hospital stay more pleasant.

We’ve created an Amazon Wish List to help make it easy for you.  Please donate what you can and feel free to share with others. If you would like to do some shopping on your own, they need the following:

  • Microwave popcorn
    • Chex Mix or other salty snacks
    • Applesauce pouch or fruit gummies
    • Life Savers or similar roll of hard candy/mints
    • Travel size shampoo (3 oz)

    • Travel size toothpaste
    • Toothbrushes
    • Travel size body wash (3 oz)

Event 3: Aurora Anytime Bags

We will again partner with Aurora Day Camp to host a morning of volunteering at the official Dragon Con office on March 19th. We will be assembling sanitized Aurora Anytime Bags packed full of fun activities and crafts for children confined to their hospital rooms at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Aurora provides these bags year round for patients in treatments, isolation and in the PICU. Children and families spend endless hours and days at CHOA and these fun, creative activities are loved by patients, parents and the staff at CHOA!

Aurora Day Camp is so excited to provide this memorable and unique hands on volunteer service project for our Superheroes. They will provide all supplies, a short program on their mission and impact and an opportunity to meet one of the camper families.

Launched in 2017, Aurora Day Camp is Georgia’s only free, full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings ages 3 1⁄2 –16. But Aurora is more than just a full-summer day camp, they are a fun-filled community that allows children with cancer and their siblings to just be kids. Aurora provides a creative, safe and supportive program where children with similar and shared experiences are supervised by a dedicated and trained staff who are keenly aware of their unique needs. All of this while allowing children to continue medical treatment and enjoy the comfort and safety of their own homes at night. In addition to the summer camp, they also host a range of year-round and in-hospital programs that support children throughout their journey. There are no other programs like these in Georgia and every dollar they raise stays here in Georgia.

Please note, there are two Superhero projects scheduled for this day.  Please register individually for both if you would like to stay through both projects.  Lunch will be provided during the time between.

Event 4: Lauren's Run with CURE Childhood Cancer

We are ecstatic to support our 2023 official charity with not one, but TWO projects.

For the last 28 years, hundreds of families have gathered to walk and run in support of CURE Childhood Cancer, raising more than $5.1 million for lifesaving pediatric cancer research. Lauren’s Run & Picnic, presented by AutoNation, truly brings the community together, with families, schools, and companies forming race teams to support our fight.

After the race, participants, as well as families diagnosed with childhood cancer, join together for the CURE Annual Picnic. The CURE Picnic is a day unlike any other! Dozens of games, prizes, elaborate face painting, enormous inflatables, music and dancing, arts and crafts, a full lunch, and so much more.

Several volunteer opprortunities are available:

  • Inflatables
  • Carnival Games
  • Food Area Monitors
  • Floaters
  • Clean Up

In addition to walk volunteers, CURE Childhood Cancer is looking for cosplayers (several princesses, superheroes, and popular movie characters) to roam the picnic,  walking around and engaging with the children and their families. We love all Superheroes, Princesses, Power Rangers, Story Book Costumes, Star Wars, X-Men, etc. Since this event is put on for the patients and families that we serve, we do kindly request that the costumes are kid friendly. We will review all submissions and coordinate to avoid duplicate costumes.

Come out and support this year’s official Dragon Con charity and get a glimpse into their incredible mission.
